W bro. Robert English Womphrey was a prominent Newcastle and Wallsend Freemason, co-founding member of Lodge Temperance 2557 and our first Secretary. He served as Senior Warden in 1896, Master in 1897 then was reinvested as Secretary in November 1899, a position he held at various times until 1945. He was also a founding member of several Wallsend Lodges.
