In 1994, Lodge Temperance 2557 was contacted by Salem Lodge No 1443 with Bro James Cuthbert’s Masonic certificates and photograph. They were found in the belongings of Bro James’s daughter, Mrs. Joy Peeke after she died and passed to the wife of one of the Past Master of Salem Lodge.

Bro. James Cuthbert was a Freemason and member of Lodge Temperance 2557.

Bro. R. Hume proposed him as a fit and proper person to be made a Mason. He was a 34 year old School Teacher living at “Ivy House”, Beamish, Co. Durham. He was initiated into the mysteries and privileges of Freemasonry on June 17th 1901, passed to the second or fellowcraft degree on July 15th and raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason on August 19th 1901. He was installed in the chair of King Solomon in 1911 and resigned from the Lodge on November 19th 1925.

In the 1911 census he is recorded as being an elementary school teacher working for Durham County Council and living at Ivy House, Beamish with his wife, Edith Annie, two sons Cecil and Leslie and his widowed mother-in-law, Isabella Carmichael.
