Our Famous Northern Tenor
Wow! Can’t believe the disparate occupation of members in our Lodge who served in World War 1. The latest is Bro Matthew Newton, a famous northern tenor and vocalist.
Born into a family of labourers and miners, it’s surprising that Matthew was able to pursue a career as a singer and entertainer. Perhaps his story is like that of the young boy in the film “Billy Elliot” who had a passion for dancing and overcame many obstacles to pursue his dream.
His stage debut was at the Tyne Theatre as Hilarion in Princes Ida in April 1910 and he went on to pursue a career as a professional vocalist and Tenor performing at venues throughout the country.
He was a Gunner during WW1, first with the Royal Garrison Artillery, then the Royal Field Artillery and managed to perform at military concerts raising money for the comfort of the soldiers at the front.
