Update to R. W. Cairns Biography
We were recently contacted by Maurice Large, a member of the Unitarian Church in Ellison Place, Newcastle.
He was asked about a brass plaque they have in the church which commemorates Robert W Cairns and as a result he found our biography on the Lodge Temperance website of Bro Robert, a member who served in the Great War. He complimented our biography which he said gave him a lot more information than expected, for which many thanks.
Maurice has found in their church register the entry recording Robert W. Cairns death on 12th June 1941 and the information that he was cremated at Newcastle Crematorium, the officiating minister being their Rev Herbert Barnes and his ashes were interred at Berwick.
In his email Maurice also commented – “It is also interesting to note that he (Robert Weatherston Cairns) had his business premises in Picton Place, which was handy for our church when it was in New Bridge Street and just around the corner from our present building in Ellison Place, opened in January 1940”.
Maurice provided a copy of the memorial plaque which you can see on our updated biography of Robert here
Thank you for the acknowledgment, but you got my surname wrong – it’s Large.
Hello Maurice, it’s been corrected on the post
Sorry, that was not intended as a complaint, but if anyone were to want to contact me, it could create a problem.
May I have permission to quote (with a suitable acknowledgment) from your article for the benefit of our church members?
Yes no problem
