To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Masonic Samaritan Fund (MSF), the Charity is awarding £1M in grants to medical research projects. The MSF has invited every Freemason to nominate one research proposal from an agreed shortlist of five projects based in, or near our Province.

  • British Heart Foundation

How we can spot and treat a protein that can cause life-threatening heart disease? This research will identify lethal titin varieties. Most titins are healthy, but others are so damaging that patients develop cardiomyopathy, heart failure and some even die.

  • Parkinson’s UK

A solution for the life-threatening symptom of swallowing problems in people with Parkinson’s. The team will test whether carefully controlled electrical stimulation directly onto the muscles in the neck improve swallowing. There are three techniques and their aim is to prove which is most beneficial for people with Parkinson’s

  • Breakthrough Breast Cancer

Stopping Secondary Breast Cancer: The research will explore how to prevent the growth and spread of breast cancer. Unpicking the biological mechanisms that link special cells within breast tumours to the development of secondary breast cancer will mean we can stop the disease in its tracks.

  • Macular Society

Finding a cure for age-related macular degeneration (AMD); the biggest cause of sight loss. Researchers will work to create a human disease model of AMD. This model will be available to other researchers accelerating progress towards understanding how the condition develops and testing new treatments.

  • Yorkshire Cancer Research

A new treatment for lung cancer. The team will take an existing experimental drug which is known to make tumour cells more sensitive to radiotherapy and test whether this drug can sensitise lung cancer cells and make radiotherapy more effective at destroying the cancer.
