Bro Guy Hayler
Bro. Guy Hayler was a prominent temperance advocate and political reformer, Good Templar, Freemason, co-founding member of Lodge Temperance 2557 and our first Senior Deacon. While in Newcastle he served as Secretary to the North of England Temperance League and provided one of its rooms for the first meeting of our founding members.
At six years old, Guy signed the teetotal pledge on a blacksmith’s anvil in his hometown of Battle, Sussex and joined the Band of Hope, a children’s temperance organization founded in 1847. His life was devoted to Temperance work and he never lost faith in a future in which people would embrace prohibition as the only answer to the drink problem.
